Daniel Radcliffe Won't Film More Wizarding World Of Harry Potter Rides
The next few years are going to be pretty exciting for fans of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It was recently announced that a new Wizarding World location would be opening up in Universal Hollywood over the next few years as Universal Orlando expands its current "Potter"-themed area. What's neat about the Wizarding World is the ability for the "Potter" legacy to live on even as we get further and further away from the culmination of the book and film series'. No matter how many years pass, Harry, Ron and Hermione will still be there, ageless, inviting fans to go on adventures with them in "Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey." Daniel Radcliffe and castmates Emma Watson and Rupert Grint all recorded video specifically for "Forbidden Journey" while they were still shooting "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." It's worth wondering, then, whether or not Wizarding World's expansion means Dan, Emma and Rupert might don their Hogwarts uniform again over the next few years. When MTV News caught up with Radcliffe while he was promoting "The Woman in Black," he said he doesn't see it happening any time soon. "To be honest, I dont think I would do that," he said. "Because, if that's going to be happening over the next few years, I'm going to be spending my time over the next few years ... working quite hard to make a separation and show people that I can do other stuff so I think it might be counterproductive for me to be continually revisiting and revisiting." Even if Radcliffe isn't interesting in filming further Wizarding World rides, this could be an interesting opportunity to have other -- or new -- cast members come in and record video for their own rides. Luna's Looney Thestral Coaster or McGonagall's Transfiguration Adventure -- two ideas we just made up -- would not need Radcliffe's involvement to go forward. And, if Universal were to make a Gringotts ride as has been speculated, then they could just use footage from "Deathly Hallows: Part 2" instead of shooting anything new. Radcliife made sure that he didn't sound ungrateful after admitting he'd probably turn down the opportunity to do more work on the creation of Wizarding World rides. "As I've always said to you, I feel like I've said a thousand times, I never want to turn my back on 'Potter.' It gave me everything, and it would be turning my back on 10 amazing years of love and excitement and having a great time," Radcliffe said. "And I'm starting to get a little bit long in the tooth to be wearing the wizarding school uniform. We've all got to be facing up with that as well." Fair enough, Dan. We don't want to see a grey Harry Potter any time soon -- unless it's on "Saturday Night Live." Are you disappointed that Radcliffe wouldn't want to record more footage for Wizarding World? SPC had no 'Separation' anxieties
It was the screening at Telluride that convinced Sony Pictures Classic toppers Michael Barker and Tom Bernard that "A Separation" had the goods. The response to the pic at the fest last fall was so strong that the SPC chiefs resolved to push filmmaker Asghar Farhadi for directing and original screenplay Oscar honors as well as the film for foreign-lingo pic.Farhadi thought they were nuts. But on Tuesday morning, the helmer took a break from working on a screenplay in Paris to send the SPC duo an email that began with: "Wow."Barker told Variety that he was not surprised that Farhadi landed an original screenplay nom in addition to the pic making the foreign-lingo cut.Barker and Bernard have broken the language barrier in the screenplay category in the past with foreign pics. Pedro Almodovar won the original screenplay trophy for 2002's "Talk to Me," while Agnieszka Holland was nommed for adapted screenplay in 1992 for "Europa Europa.""The (Acad's) writers branch has a history of paying attention to the quality of the work regardless of where the movie comes from," Barker told Variety.Farhadi did the translation of the "Separation" script from Farsi to English himself. SPC made it available to members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Science's writing branch via a download, "and boy, did they download it," Barker said.Farhadi said the shock of the Academy recognition is in keeping with the strange journey he's been on with "Separation.""For a long time I had this picture carved inside my head," he told Variety. "I don't know how it got there, but once it was there I just knew I had to make this film." Contact Cynthia Littleton at cynthia.littleton@variety.com

Story's the thing at Variety Entertainment Summit
Arnaud Robert, Chris Cookson and Darcy Antonellis appear onstage during Variety Entertainment Summit CTO, DreamWorks Animation Ed Leonard speaks onstage at the Variety Entertainment Summit. There was plenty of high-tech buzz -- about mobile and cloud computing in particular -- at Wednesday morning's panel of high-level studio technologists at the Variety Entertainment Summit, but the speakers reminded Hollywood to keep the basics in mind: Telling stories to auds, and making those stories simple and easy to consume, is what all the tech is for.Addressing UltraViolet, Sony Pictures president of technologies Chris Cookson said it was important to remember why the cloud platform was created in the first place: "I shouldn't have to think about what's the shelf life of the technology I might buy in order to determine whether or not that channel is the one I want to get to put the movie in my library. The question is 'How do I engage the content I'm interested in and have the technology serve me, not the other way around?'"Darcy Antonellis, president of Warner Bros. technical operations, told attendees of arriving at her high-tech Las Vegas hotel room, puzzling over the control interfaces for the room's features, then feeling sympathy for the average consumer."I had this vision of someone sitting in the middle of the room, completely frozen, unable to shut the lights off," she said. "It resonated with me that if I work in the tech sector, and if I'm stunned by an environment like that, what does the average consumer do? Other than shut down."I think the point is that any of these services we look to launch, the consumer is first, they have to be first. They don't want to know how it works, they want it to be transparent. We love that challenge."In addition to Antonellis and Cookson, panelists included Arnaud Robert, senior VP of technologies for the Walt Disney Co., and Ed Leonard, chief technology officer for DreamWorks Animation. Guy Finley, executive director of the Media & Entertainment Services Alliance, moderated.Arnaud cautioned that there are still two major issues with cloud platforms like UltraViolet. First, he noted, is consumer confidence."They don't even trust the hard drives on their computers, because it crashed once and they lost all their data," he said, "so we have a confidence barrier we have to go through."The second issue is setting realistic expectations. "If we say seamless access, consumers will do the leap of faith and think it's really any device and really anywhere. 'And right now, I'm travelling to Africa with this non-smartphone, how come I can't see my content in HD?' That's an expectation we need to manage, I think."Asked about whether there's a future for physical media like Blu-ray and DVD, Cookson said, "The content is about the story or the experience or the engagement with the characters. It's not about where the bits got delivered."Disks are one way to deliver bits, he said, but other ways can deliver the same bits and the same experience."For us to think in terms of DVD or Blu-ray as being the product, I think ignores the point that really, what's on the disk is the product," Cookson said. "So we shouldn't be concerned about are the fortunes of the disk. It's about, are people engaging with the product?"Antonellis believes the entertainment and tech industries are at "an incredible paradigm shift" as development cycles speed up. "The notion of a multi-year, standard-setting development process just cannot exist. We just announced a product yesterday that was built in less than six months through TechCrunch. We like to say we have 8,000-plus brains across the studio and we want to unlock those ideas. You don't have to be an engineer to bring a terrific idea that we can, and have the responsibility to, fund and apply a bunch of talent towards."Creating that culture, and creating that ability to churn ideas and convert them into services and products, is really what our business as a technology-based studio is becoming. And I don't think I've had as much fun in my years in the business because of this paradigm shift." Contact David S. Cohen at david.cohen@variety.com
